How To Clean Your Toaster Oven

It's a Crumby Job
Ideally, your toaster oven would have a simple crumb drawer which you could simply remove and invert over the sink or trash can. Many new models have this feature, but it took a while to develop.

Some Quick Tips for Sanitary Toasting
Toaster ovens often include the unfortunate cleaning aid "door" whereby you unlatch the lower panel and the accumulated crumbs come tumbling out. Be ready for this by placing the unplugged toaster over the sink or trash can.

  • Melted plastic on your toaster: Wait for the toaster to cool down, then apply a little nail polish remover.
  • Use a degreaser on the glass door of your toaster oven. This will work much more quickly than scrubbing or window cleaner.
  • You'll want to remove the lower panel if it needs more than a de-crumbing. Use a synthetic abrasive pad and dish soap (or an abrasive cleaner) in your sink. It may need a soaking.
  • Don't use anything abrasive on the exterior of your toaster oven. You want it looking shiny for when guests come over.
  • If the inside needs scrubbing, just make sure it's unplugged and use a soft, synthetic brush. Do not use metal and do not test the durability of the heating elements. Breaking a heating element will cause a very unpleasant explosion of spark and fire should you turn it on.

Pretty simple, really. It's a wonder you don't do it more often.
